COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Clerk Terry Kubasiak and her staff are concerned for their safety because of changes to Michigan’s gun laws. For years, county gun boards approved or denied concealed weapon permits but the new state law that took effect December 1, 2015 eliminated the boards and turned that job over to county clerks.
Kubasiak told Branch County Commissioners yesterday that instead of the Sheriff’s Department taking calls from the public and getting screamed at when someone wants to know why they couldn’t be approved for a CPL, concealed pistol license, her office will now hear the complaints. Kubasiak said the fears are real because there is no full time security at the only entrance to the Branch County Courthouse with those doors right outside her office.
A possible solution to the situation was suggested yesterday in the form of a hidden electronic warning system with an alarm button at each employee’s desk that would alert law enforcement officers to respond in the case of an emergency. Commissioners will consider the proposal after reviewing presentations from companies that would be interesting in bidding on supplying their security products.
