COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal baseball team will be going for its first MHSAA Regional title since 2013 after shutting out Otsego 1-0 in a Division 2 Regional Semifinal contest Wednesday at Lowe Field.
Owen Tappenden gave up one hit and one walk while striking out 10 batters in 6-1/3 innings to earn the victory. Dayton Ennis picked up the save, allowing one hit and no walks with two strikeouts in 2/3 of an inning.
The Cardinals scored the only run of the game in the fifth. Royale Fleming led off with a double, then advanced to third on a Kayden Roby single. Fleming scored on an RBI ground out by Luke Stout. The only other Coldwater hit came on a leadoff double from Logan Turner in the seventh.
For the Bulldogs, starter Kaleb Hildebrand took the hard luck loss, allowing one run on three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in seven innings. Jaxon Ray had both Otsego hits as they conclude their season at 13-20.
The Cardinals improved to 20-16 and will face Wayland Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the second Regional Final game at Stevensville Lakeshore. Wayland advanced with a 5-0 shutout at Charlotte. The first Regional Final game at Lakeshore will feature Vicksburg against Grand Rapids Christian. The two Regional champions will play a Quarterfinal contest Saturday afternoon for the right to advance to the Division 2 Semifinals next Thursday at MSU.

Winner advances to MHSAA Division 2 Baseball Semifinal #3, June 11, 9 AM at MSU’s McLane Stadium, to face the winner of Forest Hills Eastern Quarterfinal #5.
