COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports from over the weekend, in wrestling, Coldwater finished 5th out of 21 teams at Clinton in the Dave Elliott Memorial Tournament. Leading the Cardinals to a total of 99.5 points was Zach Gipple, who took first place at 189 pounds. Also placing were Sam DeMeester and Faheem Abdullah, each finishing third, Zach Miller with a 4th place showing, Daniel Pino, fifth, and Jesse Miller, sixth.
Quincy also competed and tied for next to last with 26 points.
Also on Saturday, at Union City, it was the Paul Smeltzer Memorial Invitational. The host Chargers finished second out of 8 teams with 167-and-a-half points with Marshall winning the meet with 177 points. First place finishers for Union City were Brandon Powell, Colton Johns, Jacob Todd, and Tristan Banks.
In junior varsity wrestling, Bronson competed in a tournament at Three Rivers and bringing home gold medals for the Vikings with 3-0 records on the day were Isaac Tappenden, Bryce Withington, Cody Schwartz, Alex Arias, and Randy Thyng.
In boys basketball non-conference action Saturday night, Quincy was a winner at home 64-43 over Climax Scotts, improving the Orioles record to 3-2. Quinn Eifrid had a game-high 17 points in the victory with 10 for Brandon Gary. Also, Drew Nathan had 9 points and Nathan Karney added 8 points, 6 assists, and 6 steals.
In gymnastics Saturday, Coldwater competed at the Lowell Invitational and finished ninth out of 13 teams while earning their second MHSAA Regional qualifying team score at 120.200. The meet included four of the top ten ranked teams in the state with defending state champion Rockford winning the tournament. Coldwater competed on the floor exercise first, starting their day with a season high total of 33.3 points and 8 individual qualifying scores.
Earning qualifying scores were Amanda Daoud, Darien Dyer, Shelby Kahler, Abby Swick, Madison Hedstrom, Sarah Odom, Brooke Neitzert, and Claire Sheppard led by Daoud with an 8.525. Then on the vault, the Cardinals had five individual qualifiers, again led by Daoud with an 8.15. Also qualifying were Dyer, Kahler, Neitzert and Hedstrom. Next on the uneven bars, Daoud earned a 7.575 for her third of the 4 needed regional qualifying scores. Swick also posted a qualilfying score. The balance beam was the final event with no individual qualifying scores. Daoud led the Cardinals in the all-around category. Coldwater will travel to Jackson Lumen Christi on Wednesday for their next conference match.
There are no varsity events scheduled for today.
