COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Monday night in varsity boys and girls basketball, Coldwater captured a pair of close wins over Pennfield in makeup action for their Interstate Eight Conference contests that were snowed out two weeks ago.
In last night’s girls game in Coldwater, it was a 49-45 comeback victory for the Lady Cardinals over the Panthers. Coldwater was down 9 midway through the third quarter before outscoring Pennfield 22-9 over the last 16 minutes. Kendall Galloway came off the bench to score a game high 18 points and was our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater.
Galloway sparked her team with 9 points in the second quarter, which opened with the Lady Cardinals trailing 15-11 and ended with Coldwater up at halftime 27-25. Tyler Scheid had a game-high 11 rebounds in the win, which improved the Lady Cardinals record to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in the conference. Friday night, Coldwater will host Marshall, which is undefeated in the I-8.
The Lady Cardinals made it a sweep last night, winning both of the reserve games. In the JV victory, Emilee Smoker had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Samantha Rodesiler added 14 points. The Coldwater freshman won 41-29 with 12 points and 11 rebounds for Kelsi Herlan.
In last night’s boys varsity game at Pennfield, it was a tight one all the way with Coldwater outlasting the Panthers in overtime 66-58. The Cardinals won the extra period 15-7 after the game was all even at 51 at the end of regulation time. There were 7 lead changes and 10 ties with Coldwater’s largest lead at 9 points late in the first half.
Nate Waterbury had a game-high 19 points for the Cardinals with Brady Beckhusen close behind with 18 and Colin Warner added 15 points as Coldwater improved to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
Pennfield took both of the reserve games last night, with their JV team beating the Cardinals 70-59 with Ethan Wiley scoring 34 points in the loss. The Coldwater freshmen fell to the Panthers 34-33 with 8 points for Bryce Lafferty.
Elsewhere last night, in boys basketball, Union City won a non-conference game at Mendon 56-48. Jalen Boes had 17 points, Elijah Way 13, and Elijah Harris 12 while as a team, the Charger’s victory included a 21-for-21 performance from the free throw line as they improved their record to 7-2.
Mendon won the JV game 59-36 with 11 points for Union City’s Carson Stanton.
In girls basketball, Bronson lost at home 46-39 to Battle Creek St. Philip. Kiera Lasky had 15 points in the non-conference defeat, which dropped the Lady Viking’s record to 6-4.
Tekonsha lost 46-42 at Burr Oak with 14 points for Jordynn Lloyd and 13 points and 14 rebounds for Alexis Newbold.
Tonight in high school sports, in a Branch County boys basketball matchup we’ll have on the radio, it’s Coldwater at home against Quincy and it’s also the 2nd annual Hoops for Hope Suicide Prevention and Awareness fundraiser event sponsored by the Branch County Suicide Prevention Coalition. Our live coverage begins with the pre-game show at 7 p.m. with the tip-off set for around 7:30 p.m. following the junior varsity contest which starts at 6 pm. There’s no freshman game tonight.
Also in boys hoops, it’s Bronson at Battle Creek St. Philip. And in girls basketball this evening, it’s Quincy at Union City. In varsity bowling this afternoon, Coldwater has a home match against Charlotte at Midway Lanes.
In middle school sports, it was a busy girls basketball schedule yesterday. Coldwater swept their 4 games with Charlotte. In the 8th grade contests in Coldwater, the Lady Cardinals won the A game 52-34 with 22 points apiece for Carlee Crabtree and Olivia Foley along with 12 rebounds for Crabtree. Coldwater took the B game 27-20 with 16 points for Emma Moore.
In the 7th grade A game, the Lady Cardinals won at Charlotte 26-23 with 12 points for Mia Rzepka and 13 rebounds for Abby Herman. Coldwater took the B game 12-8.
Also last night, Bronson won their 2 games at home against Centreville. The Lady Vikings took the 8th grade contest 27-19 with 17 points and 18 rebounds for Keona Salesman. The 7th grade team beat the Bulldogs 36-11 with 18 points for Meagan Lasky.
Union City’s 8th grade team lost at Athens with 6 points for Hope Austin.
