COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In varsity girls basketball Thursday, Bronson’s rally came up short at White Pigeon with the Lady Vikings losing on the road 49-47. The host Chiefs were up 20-14 at the half and led 32-27 heading into the fourth quarter when they held on for the victory. Kirin Cekander had a double-double in the loss with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Bronson slips to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the BCS East.
Quincy dropped its Big 8 game at Homer with the Orioles losing to the Trojans 60-16. Katie Spalding had 6 points and 9 rebounds as Quincy’s record fell to 0-8 in the conference and 0-13 overall.
Tekonsha was a winner at home over Litchfield 36-31 with 15 points and 14 rebounds for Alexis Newbold while Jordynn Lloyd added 13 points in the Indians’ victory.
Last night in boys and girls junior varsity basketball, Coldwater suffered a pair of losses to Marshall. The Cardinals fell in the boys game at Marshall 54-28 with 15 points for Ethan Wiley. The Redhawks won the Girls game at Coldwater 41-33 with 14 points for Avery Milnes while Emilee Smoker had 10 rebounds and 8 points.
And last night in gymnastics, Coldwater posted its highest point total of the season in a victory at Parma Western, defeating the Panthers 123.5 to 118.425. The Cardinals improved their record to 3-2 including 2-2 in conference competition. The meet started on the uneven bars with Amanda Daoud pacing Coldwater with a solid 7.8 for third place.
Next on the vault, five Cardinals collected individual qualifying scores with Daoud tied for first place with a season high mark of 8.6. Freshman Erica Rodgers had an 8.2 for third place for her third qualifier on the vault and needs just one more score for a berth in the Regionals. Darien Dyer picked up her final qualifier in the event to advance to the post season while Brooke Neitzert and Shelby Kahler also had qualifying scores.
The floor exercise followed and Coldwater scored their season high on the event and Rodgers had an 8.525, earning her second qualifier on the event and a second place finish. Daoud was close behind with a season best of 8.5 to place third with freshman Claire Sheppard in fourth place at 8.15.
Finally, on the balance beam, six individuals collected qualifying scores including Madison Hedstrom who led the Cardinals by picking up her final score to compete in the post season at 8.15 for second place while Daoud picked up 3rd place. Sheppard collected a second qualifying score while the trio of Kahler, Rodgers, and Dyer each picked up a third Regional mark.
Daoud’s consistent performances earned the senior yet another personal best all-around score for second place. Rodgers also earned a personal best for a third place finish while Kahler was fourth all-around.
Tonight in high school sports, in boys and girls basketball, it’s Coldwater at home against Marshall on Hall of Fame Night for the Cardinals. Selected for the honors are Keely (Gruner) Beemer, Cassie Krenzalek, Cam Holicki, and Corey Post. The induction ceremony will take place between the games of tonight’s doubleheader. The girls game tips off first at 6 p.m. There will be free admission tonight for anyone donating a case of water for the crisis in Flint in the local cause to “Hydrate Vehicle City”.
Elsewhere tonight in boys and girls hoops, Union City hosts Athens and in between the games, there will be the first inductions into the Union City Athletic Hall of Fame. The honorees this evening are Kerri Adams, Lee Bartlett, Melanie Chard-Peloquin, Warren Converse, Mike Leson, Kenneth Parks, Andy Sechler, and Eric Tundevold. In Boys only games tonight, Bronson hosts White Piegon and Quincy is at Homer.
In middle school sports last night, in Girls basketball, Bronson won a pair of games at Cassopolis. The 8th grade team beat the Rangers 31-16 with 14 points and 26 rebounds for Keona Salesman. Bronson took the 7th grade game 37-8 with 10 points for Maddy Ratkowski.
