COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater High School girls varsity tennis team started their 2016 season with a second place finish at the Jenison/Premier Tennis Club Invitational Tennis Tournament.
Sophia Mongardi finished first at second singles. Earning second place finishes in singles were Emma Grife, Meredith Grife and Alyssa Bowen. The doubles teams of Allison Eastmead and Brooke Lafferty along with Emily Foulk and Merlyn Johnson also earned second place finishes. The doubles teams of Sadie and Samantha Youse along with Gabriel Boston and Mikaela Daoud both finished third.
Coldwater’s girls tennis team is scheduled to host Vicksburg this afternoon.
Coldwater’s boys track team finished first in the season opening Huron Relays at Eastern Michigan University on Friday. The Cardinals had 50 ½ points as they edged out South Lyon by four points for the top spot. Coldwater won the 3,200 relay and finished first in two field events. Connor Covert and Zach Gipple went 1-2 in the shot put. Covert’s winning throw went 50 feet. Gipple’s distance was 46 feet, three inches. Meanwhile, Jayden Coney won the long jump with a distance of 20 feet, two-and-three quarter inches.
The Coldwater girls finished 10th with a team score of 18 ½ points. The Cardinals were eighth in the 800 relay and had a pair of top ten finishes in the shot put. Kaci White was third with a distance of 33 feet, ten inches while Hannah Parrish was sixth with a distance of 32 feet, three-and-a-half inches. Malorie Rzepka was third in the high jump as she cleared four feet, 11 inches.
Also on the schedule this afternoon, the Coldwater girls soccer teams begin their season at home against Three Rivers. The JV match starts to 5:00 p.m., with the varsity at 6:45 p.m. at Coldwater Hiogh School’s turf field. The Bronson baseball and softball teams play at Homer.
