HILLSDALE,MI (WTVB) – Hillsdale Hospital is now requiring masks be worn by patients and visitors to the Bediako Birthing Center and the Hidden Meadows OB-GYN clinic at the Three Meadows Medical Building, effective immediately . The requirement is intended to protect patients and families from the spread of measles.
Randy Holland, chief nursing and infection control officer sayss “Due to confirmed cases of measles in Hillsdale County, we will be requiring masks to be worn in our Birthing Center and the Hidden Meadows OB-GYN clinic,” he added “This measure is put in place to protect our most vulnerable population from the spread of illness. Hillsdale Hospital’s infection control department will maintain constant monitoring and lift the mask requirement when it is safe to do so.”
No further visitor restrictions are currently in place at the Bediako Birthing Center. Patient safety will be prioritized as the healthcare team works to provide a positive experience for every mom and baby. Another alert will be issued when the masking requirement is lifted.
Public exposure sites will be shared by the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency if identified.
The agency advises receiving the recommended doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine if they have not already and if they have not had a documented history of measles infection or other evidence of immunity. Those born before 1957 are considered protected against measles.
Symptoms of measles may include a high fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, tiny white spots in the mouth, or a red, raised rash that starts on the face and spreads to the body. The health agency recommends patients talk to their healthcare providers about receiving the vaccine.
MMR vaccinations will be offered at the Hillsdale office at 20 Care Drive on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon.
