UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The high school baseball season kicked off Tuesday for both Coldwater and Union City, with Coldwater coming out on top 9-4. The Cardinals and Chargers only played one game of a scheduled doubleheader. Coldwater’s Cameron Barnes got the victory in relief. Nick Shaw went 3-for-3 with a double and two singles for the Cardinals. Collin Torrey had a double while Bryce Barringer, Brendan Spangler and Kameron Miller all had two hits.
In the junior varsity doubleheader, Coldwater won both ends of the twin bill over Union City by 10-0 scores. Winning pitcher Alex Everett and reliever Porter Skidmore combined on a six inning no hitter in the first game with Everett recording 10 strike outs in four innings of work. Austin Robey led the offense with three hits. Lucas Santure was the winning pitcher in the nightcap as he struck out eight in four innings of work. Jakob Matevia collected two hits for the Cardinals. Coldwater only committed one error during the doubleheader.
In girls softball, the Lady Cardinals swept a doubleheader at Union City 10-4 and 3-1. Opening game winning pitcher Stacy Guzy allowed three hits and struck out five. Darleen Horn got the win in the nightcap as she struck out six. Payton Watson homered and had two singles in the second game.
Coldwater also swept the junior varsity doubleheader by scores of 9-0 and 16-8. Opening game winning pitcher Tyler Scheid tossed a one hitter and struck out 13. Seairah Bradley had two hits and two RBI’s. Mallory Kissinger and Carly Duke both had three RBI’s in the nightcap. Emma Stanley was the winning pitcher while Scheid got the save.
In girls soccer, Quincy opened its season with a 10-0 win over Marshall Academy. Six different Orioles scored led by Mackenzie Moore who got a hat trick. Cailyn Hines and Hannah Kaser each had two goals while Haley Bean, Ally Parrish and Julia Hildebrand also scored for Quincy. The match was ended on the mercy rule at the end of the first half.
