ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – Angola’s historic downtown Monument was damaged late Monday night when an alleged drunk driver crashed into it while trying to flee from police.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department says one of their deputies saw a 2007 Mercury driven by 33-year-old Andrew Moreno of Fort Wayne traveling at a high rate of speed heading south on North Wayne at Mill Street at about 11:15 p.m.
The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle but it continued heading south towards the downtown area. Moreno struck the roundabout, crossed over the grass on the Monument and crashed into a planter box on the south side. The roundabout cement foundation was damaged.
Moreno was taken to Cameron Hospital for medical clearance before being taken to the Steuben County Jail where he was arrested for Habitual Traffic Violator, Resisting and Operating While Intoxicated.
