OTSEGO, MI (WTVB) – Another runner-up trophy for Coldwater’s boy’s cross country team on Saturday at Otsego’s invitational as well as a new Coldwater High School record set by race winner Shuaib Aljabaly. The junior speedster finished the 5K course Saturday in 15:34, breaking the old CHS mark of 15:44.6, set by All-Stater Jay Bilsborrow in 2005.
The Cardinals finished second behind Grand Rapids Christian, the number-one ranked Division II team in the state. Cardinal medal winners included Aljabaly, Zack Murphy who was eighth, Jordan Parkinson who was 22nd and Ben Fagen who finished 25th.
The Coldwater girls were 11th in the Division Two meet. Kathy Potter was the top finisher for Coldwater as she was 35th.
Bronson’s boys were second behind Bangor in the Division Three and Four meet on Saturday at Otsego. Colin Ransbottom finished third while Blake Bucklin was ninth, Marcus Bloom 20th, Hunter Trine 28th and Bryce Kosmerick 30th.
Bronson’s girls did not have enough runners for a team score. Meghan Vaughn was the top Bronson finisher as she was 36th.
—GIRLS VOLLEYBALL—
Coldwater finished second at Harper Creek on Saturday. The Cardinals went 3-0-1 in pool play as they defeated Delton Kellogg (25-11, 25-8), Battle Creek Central (25-7, 25-11), Portage Northern (25-13, 25-20) and split with Mendon (25-18, 9-25).
Coldwater was seeded 3rd in the gold bracket. Coldwater defeated Loy Norrix in the quarterfinals 25-16, 25-15. Coldwater then defeated Mendon who is ranked 2nd in the state in Class D in three games (21-25, 25-16, 15-11).
The Cardinals ended up losing to seventh-ranked Harper Creek in the finals 18-25, 21-25 and ended the day 5-1-1. Their overall record is now 26-5-6.
The Cardinals play again at home on Wednesday when they host Jackson Northwest in their “Win the Battle” cancer awareness event. Freshman and JV begin at 5:15, a ceremony honoring cancer survivors and those who have lost their battle will begin right after, following with the Varsity game.
Jasmine Wellet led the team in kills with 32, had 9 blocks, and 33 digs
Drue Mullin had 31 kills and led in digs with 37
Jamie Wellet led in assists with 69, had 36 digs, 26 kills, and 8 aces
Malorie Rzepka had 28 kills and 24 digs
Sam Rodesiler added 34 digs
Tyler Scheid led the team in blocks with 13, led in aces with 15, & 18 kills
Olivia Foley had 6 aces, 13 kills, 52 assists, and 33 digs
The Coldwater J.V. Volleyball team lost in the semifinals of their tournament to Edwardsburg. Coldwater defeated Athens and Mendon in pool play before defeating Sturgis in the quarterfinals.
Carlee Crabtree had 26 kills, 27 digs and seven blocks, Anna Tappeden had 30 assists, 17 kills and 26 digs, Emilee Smoker had 34 assists, 19 kills and 35 digs while Haley Steele had 32 digs.
The Coldwater J.V.’s are now 25-7-3.
Bronson went 4-1 on the day in the Bronson Polish Volleyball Classic before they lost to Edwardsburg in the tournament finals 2-0 (25-20, 25-17)
