ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – An eight week search for an alleged non-compliant registered sex offender out of Steuben County ended on Friday in the State of Texas.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department says Samuel Brett Smith was captured in Brown County, Texas without incident by the United States Marshals Service.
An arrest warrant was issued for Smith back in December alleging Smith failed to register as a sex or violent offender in Steuben County.
Smith subsequently fled Indiana and the Sheriff’s Department enlisted the help of U.S. Marshals in trying to find him.
He was booked into the Brown County Jail in Texas and was awaiting extradition back to Indiana.
A federal investigation is also being conducted into possible violations of the Adam Walsh Act which is a federal sex offender registry law. Authorities say additional federal charges may be sought.
