COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Coldwater woman showed no emotion as she entered no contest pleas on Monday in Branch County Circuit Court to a pair of child abuse charges after she was accused of abusing her infant son last year.
27-year-old Karah Louise Shepherd is looking at a possible life in prison sentence after she entered her plea to a first degree child abuse count.
The other plea was for second degree child abuse.
Two other first degree child abuse charges and a count of first degree criminal sexual conduct would be dismissed by prosecutors in exchange for her no contest pleas.
Her case was scheduled to go to trial November 7, 2017. A sentencing hearing has now been scheduled for November 27.
Shepherd was arrested following an investigation by the Michigan State Police into crimes that took place between May and July of last year.
According to court documents, Shepherd said during an interview that she got upset with her son because of his crying. The injured baby was two months old in July 2016 when Michigan State Police were called to the Community Health Center of Branch County. The injuries according to documents included broken bones.
