UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – pA new outdoor warning siren is coming to Union City by the end of next week, or potentially sooner, significantly expanding the community’s emergency alert system following a deadly tornado outbreak in March.
The Village secured the project through a specialized program offered by Calhoun County 911, adding a second siren to supplement the town’s existing operational unit.
Union City Community Schools facilitated the expansion by allowing the Village to install the hardware on school property.
This elevated, centrally located site ensures an outdoor warning coverage radius of approximately one mile, offering vastly improved safety coverage for local residents.
With the framework in place, local crews are moving quickly to finalize the installation. The Village electric line crew will soon complete the necessary electrical connections and perform routine tree trimming around the site to ensure unobstructed operation.
Once fully operational, the dual-siren setup will provide redundant, robust emergency coverage across the area.
Because the village straddles the county line, the Union City Village Council approved a dual-trigger system integrated into both the Calhoun County 911 and Branch County Central Dispatch allowing both to activate the emergency warning sirens.
