COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Emergency Management Coordinator Tim Miner told County Commissioners during their work session Thursday that the blackout October 7 and 8 which darkened the City of Coldwater for 24 hours was a good wake up call.
He said the blackout showed people they have to be prepared for the first 72 hours in case the lights go out.
Miner says they keep an eye out for people with special needs.
While the outage was an inconvenience, Miner pointed out it could have been a lot worse, as some residents in Texas and Florida were out for weeks following recent hurricanes.
In what Coldwater Board of Public Utilities officials called a perfect storm, the power outage took place after a storm knocked down two poles along U.S. 12 between Snow Prairie and Batavia Roads, which in turn took out one of two main electrical transmission lines that feeds the City of Coldwater.
The other transmission line was down at the time for planned service by International Transmission Company.
