COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In a year which has featured a dry summer, record breaking high temperatures in late September and a soggy October, the first frost of the year in Coldwater has taken place less than a week before November.
The temperature at the Branch County Memorial Airport in Coldwater went below freezing at about 2:00 a.m. and dipped to 29 degrees just after 4:00 a.m. Thursday morning.
According to National Weather Service records, the latest date the temperature dropped to 32 degrees in Coldwater was October 29, 1920.
Thursday’s first frost in Coldwater tied the record for the second latest date that was set in 1936, 1941 and 2005.
The earliest date for the first 32 degree morning in Coldwater was on September 7th, 1918.
A hard freeze takes place when the mercury drops to 28 degrees. The earliest that has happened in Coldwater was on September 21st, 1897. The latest was November 20, 1985.
The National Weather Service says Branch County normally gets its first frost of the season during the first ten days of October.
