ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – 24-year-old Xiangbo Sun, a 24-year-old Chinese national on a tourist visa, was arrested following a police sting at the home of an elderly Allegan County woman who had been defrauded of nearly $500,000.
The victim was targeted in May by a caller posing as a Federal Trade Commission official, who falsely claimed her identity had been stolen and threatened that her children’s identities were also at risk. Convinced by the caller’s specific details, she handed over retirement savings and $237,000 in gold coins to “secure couriers.”
When the scammers attempted a subsequent $60,000 cash pickup, law enforcement officers from Allegan and Kent counties ambushed the exchange, arresting Sun after he provided a matching coded dollar bill.
Investigators later discovered that Sun was part of a much larger, nationwide operation, linking him to over $1 million in fraudulent cash and gold pickups across the United States.
He now faces larceny charges in Michigan, alongside arrest warrants in two other states.
