GIRARD, MI (WTVB) – Michigan State Police say they made a marijuana bust last night on I-69 in Branch County with several pounds of suspected pot confiscated following a traffic stop in Girard Township.
Trooper Michael Thyng stopped a southbound car for having a defective exhaust system just north of Jonesville Road shortly before 9:00 p.m. Thursday. After the driver showed an Indiana ID card, trooper Thyng said he smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
A check by State Police confirmed that the driver, a 39 year old man from Fort Wayne, Indiana, had a suspended license. He was placed under arrest and was asked where the marijuana was at in the car. The driver said it was on the back seat and after lifting up some clothing, the trooper reported finding four clear bags totaling approximately 4 pounds of marijuana.
The suspect was arrested on preliminary charges of driving without a license and possession with intent to deliver marijuana. He was lodged at the Branch County Jail with his name being withheld pending arraignment in District Court.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Michigan State Police Marshall Post at (269) 558-0500.
