LANSING, MI (WTVB) – 58th District State Representative Eric Leutheuser voted in favor of House Bill 5013 which would have reformed Michigan’s auto insurance rates, but it was defeated Thursday 63-45.
Leutheuser said in a statement released by his office it was a shame the bill fell short, but he vowed to continue working to lower rates.
He said Michigan’s costs are so high because it’s the only state mandating unlimited lifetime health care coverage through car insurance.
Leutheuser felt the House plan backed by Speaker Tom Leonard and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan allowed those currently using the coverage to keep it, and those who want it in the future to continue buying it while providing more affordable options. Leutheuser admitted the legislation was not perfect, but it was a start.
Opponents claimed the bill would not actually guarantee rate reductions. Kalamazoo State Representative Jon Hoadley felt the bill had a lot of flaws in it.
