COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The City of Coldwater Planning Commission voted unanimously this week to reject a proposed temporary development moratorium, opting instead to immediately begin drafting a comprehensive, permanent ordinance on data centers.
Local officials argued that a temporary freeze would unnecessarily stall economic growth and create regulatory uncertainty for businesses, aiming instead to fast-track a definitive legal framework.
Planning and Zoning Administrator Robert Hawley explained that temporary freezes offer no long-term protection, noting that the city requires clear, definitive rules regarding exactly where and how these high-utility facilities can operate.
The pivot to a permanent ordinance signals the city’s intent to establish stable, long-term development guidelines, with planning personnel set to integrate updated land-use policies tailored to the city’s current economic climate.
Public workshops and comment sessions are expected in the coming months to gather community feedback before the final ordinance is presented for adoption.
We have gotten along without these data centers for decades, this is not what I will be voting for.
As the City Board and Mayor move forward with zoning decisions for proposed data centers, I have one question that deserves a direct and honest answer:
Have you truly done your due diligence.. not just on the economic promises, but on the people, investors, and influence behind these projects?
Many residents are aware that Peter Thiel has been a major investor in companies connected to the data center industry. They are also aware that his name has appeared in publicly released Jeffrey Epstein-related documents. Those documents raise questions that many citizens believe deserve careful scrutiny when evaluating major developments that could shape our community for decades.
This isn’t about spreading accusations or guilt by association. It’s about transparency, accountability, and ensuring that the City of Coldwater isn’t rushing into decisions based solely on projected tax revenue and economic growth while overlooking legitimate public concerns about the networks of influence surrounding these investments.
Can you honestly tell the people of Coldwater that you have thoroughly researched the financial backers, ownership structures, and potential long-term implications of these projects? Or are you asking this community to simply trust that everything has already been vetted?
