COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Michigan’s minimum wage is going up in less than two months and a number of Coldwater business owners and employers recently heard all the details of the coming wage hike from the head of the state office that manages Michigan’s wage and hour division.
Jennifer Fields with the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs in Lansing spoke to the Coldwater Noon Rotary Club at its meeting October 24. Fields said on January 1, 2018, the minimum wage goes up to $9.25 and that is the last scheduled increase. She explained that any future increases will be tied to the Michigan Treasurer, the unemployment rate and the Consumer Price Index.
The pay hike also means 16 and 17 year old workers may be paid 85% of the $9.25 an hour wage, or $7.86 an hour, while the training wage remains at $4.25 an hour. And Fields also explained that tipped employees can receive 38% of Michigan’s minimum wage.
