COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – For the 12th straight year, Civil War Days will be held rain or shine this weekend, again this year in Coldwater’s Heritage Park.
The weekend will kick off with Education Day Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Organizer Bill Smith says over 1,000 students are expected to be on hand.
Students came from as far away last year as Constantine, Sturgis and the Howe Military School in Indiana.
Smith says because of state mandated maintenance, the train ride from Coldwater to Quincy on the Little River Railroad is not be available this year.
But there will be plenty of other activities which include a free concert Friday night with Jim Oliver and Jim Dyer and a Military Ball in the Big Tent Saturday night.
The highlight of the weekend will be the reenactment of the Battle of Stone River in Murfreesboro, Tennessee which took place between December 31st, 1862 and January 2nd, 1863. Some considered it the turning point of the war.
Battles are scheduled to take place at 2:00 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.
The park will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m..
Last years event attracted 124 re-enactors and 3,000 spectators.
