COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Following a lot of discussion in recent months, Coldwater City Manager Keith Baker told the Downtown Development Authority Board Wednesday that the city has embarked on a number of initiatives to assist in the downtown’s revitalization.
Baker said one of the highest priorities in a recent study conducted by retired Chief Executive Officer Bob Harris was to increase staffing who would be tasked with working on projects, business recruitment and expansion downtown. He said the City has hired a full time Economic Development Assistant. That person will work with Branch County Economic Growth Alliance Director and Economic Specialist Lisa Miller and Baker.
Secondly, Baker said the city has engaged through a contract agreement the assistance of a local consultant to help market the downtown and recruit specific types of businesses.
Baker said they are trying to specifically targeting in order to attract a bakery, brew pub, retail and other restaurants to the downtown area.
Another priority in Harris’ report was the poor condition of the current inventory of downtown buildings. There are incentive programs available to help property owners. Baker said the city will be working with them in an effort to increase the value of the buildings, make them more saleable or to attract new tenants.
