KALAMAZOO, MI (WTVB) – A Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering in stable condition after being shot during a violent confrontation with a larceny suspect on Friday morning.
According to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the 6300 block of East AB Avenue in Richland Township just before 9:00 a.m. following reports of a theft in progress from a vehicle.
Upon arriving at the scene, a physical struggle ensued between the deputy and the suspect, during which the suspect drew a weapon and shot the deputy.
Following the shooting, the suspect stole the injured deputy’s patrol cruiser and fled the area, triggering a high-speed police chase across multiple parts of Kalamazoo County.
Officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety joined the pursuit as it barreled through downtown Kalamazoo before finally ending in a crash along Lake Street near the sheriff’s office.
The suspect was subsequently taken into police custody and transported to a local hospital for medical treatment before being lodged in the Kalamazoo County jail, while the wounded deputy remains hospitalized for treatment.
