UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The Village of Union City’s iconic Dome which once sat on top of the buildings at the corner of Broadway and Hammond Street is now lit up at its new home in the “Village Green”.
It has been a long journey that has lasted more than 15 years.
The Union City Society for Historic Preservation says the dome was on top of the Watkins-Mason Building at North Broadway and Hammond for 100 years until 2003 when it was removed and the building was torn down for a planned grocery store.
But the plans for the store fell through and the site eventually became the “Village Green” in front of the Family Dollar store.
The whereabouts of the Dome were not known until August 2015 when it was found west of Three Rivers.
The owner agreed to donate it back to the village a year later.
A Dome Project committee was formed to return the dome to its original site. The Union City Village Council formally approved the “Village Green” for the Dome Project.
An octagon gazebo now surrounds the Dome.
Money for the Dome’s restoration was raised through the Union City Centennial Trust.
