PARMA, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater High School Lady Cardinal gymnastics team defeated Parma Western Thursday night in a South Central Gymnastics League matchup by a score of 134.525 to 125.6. Coldwater is now 3-1 in league competition.
It was the second highest team score of the season for Coldwater. Coldwater swept the Panthers on the uneven bars and the balance beam to secure the win.
Coldwater began the competition on the uneven bars where the Cardinals posted an impressive seven qualifying scores with each varsity gymnast earning the MHSAA Regional mark. Abby Travelbee led the team and the competition with her score of 8.625 which was a season record.
Coldwater had a solid night on the vault, picking up an impressive nine Regional qualifying scores. The team posted a tally of 33.95 points on the event. Sophomore Leah Goodwin claimed the first place honors with her score of 8.8 points.
The Cardinals continued to build on their momentum and earned their highest team score of the season on the floor exercise at 35.1, followed by their second highest team score of the season on the balance beam at 33.3.
In the floor exercise, Coldwater collected eight individual qualifiers. Travelbee turned in her season best mark and a first place finish for her efforts at 9.125.
The Cardinals finished their night on the balance beam where they turned in six individual qualifying scores and five stuck routines. Leading Coldwater was Goodwin who earned a personal best score for her routine at 9.1.
In the All-Around competition, the Lady Cards swept the competition, earning the top four spots with three season best scores. Travelbee claimed top honors for her best four event season total of 34.7 points. Second place was awarded to Goodwin with her season high of 34.65 points. McKenna Hantz was next in line claiming the third place finish with a total of 32.675 points, her best of the year. Layla Schoch picked up the fourth place slot with her tally of 32 points.
Coldwater travels to Plymouth Canton on Saturday for a huge 17 team invitational that is a preview of the state finals competition. The Cards will see more league action next week when they host Tecumseh at home Wednesday evening.
The gymnasts are gearing up and making their final preparations for the big Stick It For a Cure Invitational that will take place next Saturday, February 8 in the auxiliary gymnasium.
