COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Planning Commission next week will consider a request from the American Moslem Society of Coldwater to approve a new site plan for a mosque and learning center.
The original plan for the two story structure at 129 Perkins Street was ok’d by the Commission in July 2018. Perkins Street is the current location of the Society’s cultural center, which was established nearly four decades ago and has expanded three times since 1980.
Revised details of the project, including the first public disclosure of the cost of the building, were unveiled yesterday at a Coldwater Sunrise Rotary meeting. Club members listened to a presentation by Musa Ahmed of Coldwater, a board member of the American Moslem Society and the manager of the project.
According to Ahmed, fundraising efforts are underway for the estimated $3.5 million project, with around $850,000 raised so far.
Ahmed said it’s hoped the project will be finished in 2023.
The Planning Commission meeting starts Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the chambers of the Coldwater City Council.
