FREMONT, IN. – (WTVB) – A high speed chase on southbound I-69 which reached speeds of close to 100 miles an hour ended just south of the Michigan-Indiana state line on Wednesday when a fleeing 2004 GMC Envoy rolled over and crashed after hitting some stop sticks.
The crash at the 356 mile marker happened at about 1:30 p.m..
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Department says deputies and the Fremont Police Department set up stop sticks near the Michigan-Indiana line in an attempt to safely end the chase.
Once the fleeing vehicle hit the stop sticks, it continued heading south for nearly a mile at a high rate of speed before leaving the road and rolling over multiple times.
The driver was identified as 31 year old John Michael Snook of Angola and the passenger was identified as 27 year old Brittany Patricia Fraley of Hamilton, Indiana.
Both Snook and Fraley were transported by Steuben County EMS in serious but stable condition to a Fort Wayne area hospital.
Snook was also taken into custody by the Indiana State Police on an outstanding Steuben County arrest warrant.
He will be booked into the Steuben County Jail once he is released from the hospital on the outstanding misdemeanor arrest warrant and will likely undergo court proceedings to be extradited back to Michigan to face additional felony criminal charges.
The original Michigan incident remains under investigation by the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and no further details are available at this time.
