COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – As firearm deer season approaches later this month, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters of a major shift designed to eliminate traditional mailing delays.
Throughout the entire month of November, the state’s online eLicense website has completely paused the sale of paper deer licenses.
This temporary change prevents situations where hunters head into the woods without physical tags because their credentials are stuck in the mail.
Instead, those needing a late-season license must either purchase traditional paper tags in person at an authorized retail location or instantly download an “eHarvest” digital tag directly through the official Michigan DNR Hunt Fish Mobile App.
The newly expanded digital tagging option offers immense field convenience, allowing hunters to validate their harvest directly on their smartphones, even when completely out of cellular range.
Upon harvesting a deer, the hunter simply opens the app, fills out the mandatory details regarding the animal’s sex and antler points, and submits the information, which will automatically sync once service is restored.
While a physical paper tag is no longer required on the animal while it remains in the hunter’s direct presence, state rules dictate that a durable handwritten backup tag (such as a piece of cardboard or duct tape with the license number) must still be attached if the carcass is left unattended or transferred to a game processor.
