COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Detroit Public Schools Community District Superintendent Nikolai Vitti is calling on the State of Michigan to cancel the rest of the school year because he feels there are too many questions about how to proceed once classes resume.
As things stand now, Coldwater Community Schools and other Branch County districts would re-open on April 14, 2020, a day after Governor Whitmer’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order for all Michigan residents expires. But Coldwater Schools Superintendent Terry Whelan is not optimistic that will happen.
While they obviously want to have the students return to the classroom as soon as they can, Whelan says they don’t want them back until they know it’s safe for everybody.
While school is out due to the COVID-19 outbreak, many school districts are providing free meals to students.
Whelan says the Coldwater numbers have gone up significantly from 222 meals last Monday to 630 one week later. The district is roviding food on Mondays and Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Jefferson Elementary and Legg Middle School.
Michigan schools are in the second week of a four week lockdown because of the COVID-19 outbreak.
