COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan Department of Corrections posted updated information on its web site Wednesday morning that showed the number of positive COVID-19 cases at the Lakeland Correctional Facility has increased to 14.
The update figures also show there are 122 positive cases in nine facilities around the state.
Lakeland is one of four locations that have a double digit number of positive cases.
The Parnall Correctional Facility near Jackson has 50 COVID-19 cases while there were 33 cases at the Macomb Correctional Facility and 12 cases at the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility.
The news comes after the Michigan Department of Corrections reported on Tuesday a corrections transportation officer in Detroit has died from coronavirus.
Director Heidi Washington says they’re still working on learning the details surrounding the officer’s death, calling it a “difficult day for all of us.”
The officer is the first M.D.O.C. employee to die from COVID-19. His name was not released.
