COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The City of Coldwater Planning Commission turned down a request Monday night to rezone a quarter acre of land at 120 and 122 South Jefferson so that property owner Abdulhameed Nasser could operate a convenience grocery store that also sold speciality goods.
Nasser wanted to rezone the property that he bought in June of 2019 from A-2 One and Two-Family Residential District to C-1 Community Business District.
The site is vacant after it was used by the Coldwater Bible Chapel religious assembly. Nassar presented a petition with 52 signatures in support of his proposed business, but the Planning Commission agreed with the city staff who said in their report it exemplified spot zoning.
Meanwhile, the Plannning Commission voted 6-2 in favor of a Special Land Use permit request from Prairie Built Barns of Coldwater.
The business requested permission to use a portion of the Willowbrook Plaza parking lot to display the sheds which they design and sell from a suite in the plaza.
