DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Jonathan Schoop hit a grand slam and Spencer Turnbull pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning as the Detroit Tigers topped the Chicago Cubs 7-1 Tuesday night.
Turnbull allowed three hits and three walks over five and two thirds innings for his third win. Schoop’s fourth career grand slam highlighted a five-run sixth for the Tigers.
Tyler Chatwood took the loss. Willson Contreras homered in the ninth for Chicago.
Michael Fulmer gets the start for Detroit against Chicago’s Jon Lester in tonight’s rubber game.
Tigers pitching coach Rick Anderson has left the team to deal with a health issue in his family. He will be away for at least a week and manager Ron Gardenhire announced that bullpen coach Jeff Pico will take over for Anderson.
Triple-A Toledo pitching coach Juan Nieves will join Detroit as the temporary bullpen coach.
