COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Administrator Bud Norman told the Board of Commissioners during their work session on Thursday that no settlement offers have been accepted in an ongoing opioid lawsuit.
Norman updated the Commissioners after there had been media reports of potential settlements.
He pointed out that the media reports were about simply proposals and discussions that serve to further the negotiation.
He added that since the Commissioners are the client, they have the final say on rejecting or accepting a settlement offer
The Commissioners decided in June of 2018 to join at other Michigan cities and counties in an ongoing lawsuit against 21 drug companies, distributors and pharmacies in an attempt to get back expenses from the national opioid crisis.
The Detroit law firm of Sommers and Schwartz is working on behalf of Branch County.
Attorney Lisa Esser from the firm pointed out during her presentation in the spring of 2018 that there were 268 opioid overdoses in Branch County between 2013 and 2016.
The defendants in the suit have claimed they are innocent.
