SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WTVB) – Anyone planning to take a swim in Lake Michigan during the Labor Day weekend had better make different plans.
The National Weather Service is urging people to stay out of the water, stay off the piers and obey the red flag warnings because of dangerous high waves.
Beach Hazard Statements have been issued all along the Lake Michigan shoreline from the Michigan-Indiana state line north to Mason County.
Forecasters say waves will build during the afternoon at West Michigan beaches Sunday, reaching heights of 3 to 8 feet and allowing strong currents to develop.
This will make swimming, operating small craft, and walking out onto piers very dangerous, especially north of Holland.
Water rescues were needed on Saturday in South Haven in smaller waves and weaker currents than those expected Sunday and Labor Day.
Dangerous conditions are expected at all West Michigan beaches through the late afternoon on Monday.
