KINDERHOOK TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Four residents managed to get to safety early Monday morning when a two story pole barn that had been partially converted into rental living quarters was destroyed in a fire west of Dragon Lake in Kinderhook Township.
Lakeland firefighters were dispatched to the blaze at 224 Prairie River Drive just before 3:30 a.m..
The structure was engulfed in flames when they arrived.
Mutual aid in the form of manpower and tankers was provided from the Bronson and Fremont, Indiana fire departments.
Life Care Ambulance was called to the scene but no injuries were reported
The fire was called under control at 4:25 a.m. and the last crew cleared the scene just before 8:00 a.m..
Lakeland Fire Chief David Smith says the cause of the fire is under investigation. He adds it started in the living area and no other structures were threatened by the fire.
The other half of the structure was used for storage.
It was the first time the Lakeland Fire Department has used their new rescue truck at a fire after it had been on display during an open house this past Saturday.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Department Victim Services Unit and the American Red Cross are assisting the fire victims.
