BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The lack of officials for high school sports in Michigan has caused two more Branch County varsity football games to be rescheduled.
Quincy’s game this week at Concord has been switched from Friday night to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. In addition, Union City’s home opener with Homer has been moved to a 4:00 p.m. kickoff on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The same situation took place last weekend with Union City’s game at Reading as it had to be moved to a 12:00 noon kickoff last Saturday.
Michigan High School Athletic Association assistant director Brent Rice said in an article last March in the Detroit News that about a decade ago, the M.H.S.A.A. had about 12,500 registered officials but that number was now down to under 10,000.
He said in the same article that the Cascades Conference had an officials shortage for football games last year which forced the moving of some games from Friday to Saturday.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also led to some officials opting out of the high school football season.
