COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Health departments around the state are required to report to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services about schools in their jurisdictions which are experiencing outbreaks of COVID-19.
Some may wonder what would qualify as a school outbreak of the virus.
Community Health Agency Personal Health and Disease Prevention Director Kali Nichols said during Thursday’s Board of Health meeting that an outbreak is defined as two or more cases with a link by place and time, indicating a shared exposure outside of a household.
She says students or staff exposed to COVID-19 outside the school building and are not thought to have spread the virus in the school due to quarantine or self-isolation are not included in the data.
This includes all schools in Michigan whether it’s K-12, college or university.
The information about school COVID-19 outbreaks is posted on the M.D.H.H.S. website each Monday at 3:00 p.m..
