COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater City Council approved the introduction of an ordinance on a 6-3 vote Monday night which amends Codified Ordinances as well as Planning and Zoning Codes in order to enable retail sales to operate from properties zoned A-2 One and Two-Family Residential if they get a special use approval.
City Planner Dean Walrack said this came about after a request to rezone a quarter acre of land at South Jefferson and Perkins for a store in the residential neighborhood was turned down last month because city staff felt it was spot zoning.
The land was purchased by applicant Abdulhameed Nasser in June of 2019. The site is vacant after it previously operated as the Coldwater Bible Chapel religious assembly. Nassar wants to operate a convenience grocery and specialty goods store on the property.
There was a petition with 52 signatures in support of his proposed business.
The Planning Commission had previously recommended to the City Council that the Ordinance be amended. It is scheduled to come back before the Council for second reading and formal action on October 12.
