COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Before the winter snowstorms arrive, the Branch County Road Commission says you should shake your mailbox before the ground freezes to make sure it’s sturdy.
Over the years, a mailbox post can rot or become wobbly. By grabbing and shaking it, a resident can know if it’s secure.
The Road Commission points out that snow coming off a plow going 35 miles an hour has surprising force.
Digging a mailbox out and reinstalling it in frozen ground is no picnic.
While the Branch County Road Commission replaces mailboxes “obviously” hit by a snowplow or piece of equipment, they are not responsible for “damage caused by standard snow removal operations.”
The Road Commission recommends residents tighten screws and test the sturdiness in the fall months.
