LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The federal government has charged six men with allegedly plotting to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer because they were mad about her mandates that were handed down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A press conference was scheduled for early Thursday afternoon in Lansing.
WOOD-TV reports that according to authorities the suspect went so far as to find and watch her vacation home and build bombs.
A document filed in federal court Tuesday identifies the suspects as Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Ty Garbin, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta.
Croft is from Delaware. All of the other suspects are from Michigan.
An FBI agent says the group targeted the governor surfaced as early as June.
WOOD-TV also reports that according to the document, militia members talked about storming the state Capitol in Lansing and killing police officers, but Garbin shut that idea down. The alleged plot involved the kidnapping of Whitmer at the governor’s vacation home and then taking her to Wisconsin to hold what is being described as “a kangaroo court trial for treason.”
