HASTINGS, MI (WTVB) – The Hastings Saxons defeated the Coldwater Cardinals in high school football for the first time since 1994 on Friday night as they hung on for a 30-29 Homecoming victory.
The Cardinals built a 23-16 halftime lead on rushing touchdowns by Cam Torres, Cooper Fredlund and Spencer Rodesiler.
The Saxons scored the only touchdown of the third quarter but the two point conversion failed which allowed Coldwater to take a 23-22 lead into the final stanza.
On 4th and six from the Coldwater 34, Hastings first pass of the game turned into a big play as Mason Denton threw a 34 yard TD pass to Evan Eastman. The two point conversion gave Hastings a 30-23 lead with 1:19 left.
But the Cardinals were not done. They used trickeration on the next play from scrimmage as Cole Barker threw a 74 yard TD pass to Deandre Douglas to pull Coldwater to within one point with 1:02 left.
The Cardinals went for two points and the win but the conversion attempt failed. Coldwater was unable to recover the on sides kick and Hastings was able to run out the clock for their fourth straight win.
Hastings had a 405-245 edge in total yards which included 371 yards on the ground. Neither team turned the ball over.
Torres led the Cardinals in rushing with 57 yards. Douglas had 165 all purpose yards. Cole Barker led the defense with nine tackles.
Coldwater is now 3-2 and will close the regular season at home next Friday against Parma Western.
