COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Statistics from the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency show that the number of persons who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the jurisdiction over the first 21 days of October has already surpassed the totals for all of September.
Health Officer Rebecca Burns told the C.H.A. Health Board on Thursday that there have been 139 additional new cases in Branch County so far in October after there were 133 cases for all of September.
Meanwhile, there have been 101 cases reported in Hillsdale County so far this month compared to 49 in September while the number of St. Joseph County cases has also doubled from 120 last month to 234 so far in October.
Burns calls the numbers very concerning and going in the wrong direction. She says the Michigan Supreme Court ruling against Governor Whitmer that she illegally drew authority from a 1945 law during her months of executive orders aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus has caused a lot of misinformation and confusion by people.
She says they are seeing fewer people wanting to use a mask and keep their social distance. Burns said, “we are seeing some real push back from folks. As a result, with all of these things combined we are seeing a real increase in COVID.”
Meanwhile, Burns says they have started scheduling flu clinics at area schools. She reported that the purpose of the school flu clinics is to make it easier for families to have their children immunized for the seasonal flu and increase the rate of people immunized.
