COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A crash involving a car and a semi on U.S. 12 in front of the Pizza Hut restaurant on Tuesday morning led to a large power outage and the shutdown of U.S. 12 between Sprague and Michigan due to downed power lines.
Branch County Central Dispatch dispatched fire, police and rescue crews to what was reported to be a personal injury accident just after 10:35 a.m.. It was later determined that there were no injuries.
The car struck a utility pole which knocked the pole and wires into the street. The semi then hit the low hanging wires which caused more damage. Coldwater Police are investigating the crash.
The City of Coldwater said in a post on their Facebook page that the ensuing power outage affected ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital along with other nearby businesses in “Burger Alley” and Jefferson Elementary School.
The damage to the equipment meant it took crews several hours to make repairs. The power was restored at about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday night and U.S. 12 was re-opened between Sprague and Michigan Avenue.
Drivers had to take alternate routes throughout the afternoon. South Michigan Avenue, Sauk River Drive and South Sprague Street were used as detours. Traffic was not allowed to continue south on Sprague between the railroad tracks and Garfield due to construction,
