COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The football season is over at Coldwater High School. The team has been forced to forfeit their MHSAA Division Three District semifinal playoff game at Stevensville-Lakeshore that was scheduled to be played on Saturday afternoon due to COVID-19 issues.
With the forfeit loss, the Cardinals finished the season 5-3.
The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency informed Coldwater Community Schools on Monday that the district had to transition to a virtual learning model for 14 days due to the spread of COVID-19 that took place within their Transportation Department.
The dominoes in the athletic department have been falling since that time. There was an effort to have all of athletes tested for the virus in an attempt to keep the fall sports seasons continuing. A team had to have a clean slate of negative tests in order to continue playing.
But the girls volleyball team had to forfeit their Division One district semifinal match with Mason on Wednesday night that was scheduled to be played at the Coach Floyd Eby Gymnasium.
It was also announced on Wednesday that the season was over for the Coldwater swimming and diving team due to a COVID-19 positive test. Both of the remaining regular season meets against Mattawan on Thursday night and the Coldwater Invitational on Saturday were canceled.
Athletic Director Todd Farmer said in a letter to parents that the health and safety of all students will always be placed at the forefront of their decisions.
