COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – With a little more than two weeks to go before the resignation of Branch County Circuit Court Judge Bill O’Grady takes effect the first candidate to fill the position has emerged.
Branch County Prosecutor Zachary W. Stempien has formally announced his intention to seek election as the next Branch County Circuit Court Judge to replace outgoing judge Bill O’Grady, and will also seek an interim appointment to fill the upcoming vacancy.
In a news release Stempien cited his professional experience, service to the community, and commitment to public safety and fair justice as reasons for his decision.
Stempien highlighted his extensive legal career, including litigating cases at various judicial levels, testifying before the Michigan House and Senate, and his involvement in legal associations.
He also noted his community involvement through volunteer work and coaching youth sports.
O’Grady’s resignation will be effective as of January, 1 2026. Governor Whitmer will appoint an interim judge to fill the position until the November 2026 election.
