COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A request from Branch County Administrator Bud Norman that Assistant 911 Director Jean Ratkowski receive additional compensation for her work since October 1 was brought forward by the Board of Commissioners during their work session on Thursday.
Ratkowski has been working two jobs in since the retirement of long time 911 Director Kurt Spalding. Norman is requesting Ratkowski be compensated at an additional 20 percent to the base monthly salary for each month.
Commissioner Tom Matthew joined the other four Commissioners in voting yes but he was concerned this would lead to others seeking a similar type of compensation when a department is shorthanded.
Commissioners Jon Houtz and Randall Hazelbaker felt Ratkowski deserved the compensation.
Formal action on Norman’s request is scheduled to take place next Tuesday.
Commissioners also decided to bring forward to Tuesday’s meeting formal action on moving Emergency Management Coordinator Tim Miner from under the 911 Director to the County Administrator. Miner has worked with Norman on management issues during the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s being recommended this relationship and reporting system continue at a savings of $3,000 a year to the county. The County 911 Director was receiving this compensation but there would be no compensation given to the administrator.
