COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Board of Commissioners approved the 911 Communications contract for a new 800 megahertz radio system with J & K Communications on Tuesday.
County Administrator Bud Norman said the contract sum came out to over $9-point-3 million and while there would be five towers, a sixth tower could be added.
Norman added the contract had a one year warranty and it detailed how disputes would be handled.
Coldwater Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz said the tower sites have been selected and would be in Quincy, Coldwater, Union City, Bronson and at the old Lakeland Elementary School where the land acquisition is still being work out.
He added a possible sixth site would be on Clarendon Road in the northeast corner of Branch County.
Funding in the form of a surcharge by a maximum of $2.52 per phone device was approved last month by Branch County voters 9,596 to 8,574.
The new radio system would replace an old system that dates back to the early 1990’s. The proposed surcharge was backed by police and fire departments around Branch County as well as the Branch County Sheriff’s Department. They say the new equipment would provide better coverage and increase safety for police and firefighters.
