BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – It was an icy and dangerous start to 2021 on New Years Day as a low pressure system brought a wintry mix of freezing rain, freezing drizzle, rain, sleet, and snow to Branch County and the surrounding area.
The National Weather Service reports most locations received around a tenth to two-tenths of an inch of ice accumulation, with a few slightly higher amounts up to a quarter of an inch.
There were reports of ice-induced power outages, tree and structure damage along with numerous traffic accidents.
A portion of westbound I-94 in Kalamazoo County had to be shut down due to a multiple vehicle crash near the Westnedge Avenue exit.
To the north of Branch County, the precipitation changed to snow with totals of 1 to 3 inches of accumulation.
The precipitation moved into Branch County just before 11:00 a.m. and led to an afternoon and evening filled with numerous crashes and slide offs.
At least 10 crashes and slide offs were reported into Branch County Central Dispatch. Three of the crashes on Jonesville, Newton and Burr Oak Roads were dispatched as personal injury accidents.
No serious injuries were reported.
