SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Water levels on the Great Lakes are continuing to slowly drift lower.
Some that have been in record high water territory over the last year are now easing away from those milestones, according to MLive Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa. Lake Michigan and Lake Huron have been the highest compared to average recently, causing the most shoreline erosion. Lakes Michigan and Huron have dropped three inches during the past month and are now six inches lower than one year ago at this time.
Torregrossa says this a good sign that there will be reduced erosion and damage when water goes into its cyclical rise from March through July. The two lakes are now four inches below the record levels that were set in January 2020. They are forecast to drop another inch over the next month. If precipitation continues to stay light, the lakes may even fall two inches.
