ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan State Police are investigating a fraud involving a senior citizen in St Joseph County.
Troopers say a person was contacted by individuals he believed to be his grandson and a lawyer who stated his grandson was injured in an at-fault crash and needed $9,500 in cash for medical and legal fees.
The man withdrew his money and sent it by way of FedEx to a destination address given to him by the fraudsters.
He got another call the next day requesting an additional $9,500.
Troopers from the Marshall Post warn citizens to always be skeptical of solicitations that come over the phone. These fraudsters often claim to be a loved one in immediate need of assistance after having been involved in an accident or finding themselves in legal trouble.
It is strongly advised that citizens never send cash via mail and always confirm information with your family prior to trying to send any assistance.
